Dear Editor
Children misled by anti-fluoridationists claims
It is a tragic state of affairs when young children are being led by anti-fluoridationists to believe that fluoride causes bone cancer (Year 7 Letters, 17 May).
Bone cancer rates in children are higher in Queensland (where only 5 percent of water is fluoridated) compared with New South Wales or Victoria (80-90 percent fluoridated water).
A 2006 brochure compiled by Victorian Government health authorities in conjunction with the Cancer Council of Australia found the rates of bone cancer (per million children per year) were: Queensland 4.5, New South Wales 2.9 and Victoria 2.9.
This means the rates of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) are lower in states where the majority of the population has fluoridated water and higher in Queensland which is mainly unfluoridated.
As a local dentist interested in the best oral outcomes for my patients, I support fluoridation and I find it morally repugnant that children at our local schools appear to have been inappropriately influenced on this very important subject.
Yours sincerely
