Letter to the editor

The Morning Bulletin

Dear Editor

Dentists have no hidden agenda in supporting fluoridation

Just so that your readers can be clear about the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch views on fluoridation, I reiterate the following in response to Mr Jim Beyers letter (5 April).

Two independent studies, by Queensland Health and the Local Government Association of Queensland, in 2004 and 2005 found that more than two-thirds of Queenslanders support fluoridation.

Australians in every capital city in Australia, except Brisbane, have enjoyed the safe and cost-effective benefits of fluoridation for about 30-40 years – that’s three to four decades in which adverse health affects, if there were any, would have emerged.

The ADAQ has no hidden agenda in supporting fluoridation. We know from cold, hard experience that it is one of three proven tools in preventing tooth decay. The others are regular brushing and a healthy diet. As a matter of professional interest, we monitor anti-fluoridation arguments and do not believe they contain any credible or valid reasons to change our pro-fluoridation policy.
