Dear Editor
Known anti-fluoridationist continues to muddy the water
Australians living in every capital city except Brisbane have enjoyed the safe and cost-effective benefits of fluoridation for about 30-40 years during which time adverse health affects, if there were any, would have emerged.
It is useful for your columnist (Jim Soorley April 2) to know that the incidence of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) averages 0.9/100,000 in Australia and 1.0/100,000 in Queensland. There is no statistical difference despite huge differences in water fluoridation exposure.
The recent report from The United States National Academy of Sciences, to which Mr Soorley appears to refer, considered natural fluoride above 4ppm in water and not the controlled and strategic inclusion of small (av 1ppm) doses of fluoride as recommended by Australian authorities.
