Letter to the Editor
Bundaberg Bugle
31 March 2006
Dear Editor,
No valid evidence of disease link
Ms Ailsa Boyden (Letters March 24) has provided misleading information to your readers on a number of points regarding fluoridation.
Residents in all Australian states except Queensland have enjoyed the safe oral health benefits of fluoridated water for about 30-40 years. In Queensland, only 5 percent of residents have access to fluoridated water.
The incidence of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) averages 0.9/100,000 in Australia and 1.0/100,000 in Queensland. There is no statistical difference despite huge differences in water fluoridation exposure.
Ms Boyden refers to a Harvard study by Elise Bassin and suggests the findings were suppressed. In fact Ms Bassin herself acknowledged the limitations in her study, which was submitted as a doctoral thesis not for acceptance into a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
