Letter to the Editor
Fraser Coast Chronicle
20 April 2006
Dear Editor
A breathe of fresh air – editor speaks sense
You are to be congratulated for your informed views and proactive statements on fluoridation, as expressed in the April 19 editorial.
Be assured that the Australian Dental Association strongly supports fluoridation as a safe and cost-effective means of providing better quality oral health outcomes for all.
Directly or indirectly, all Queenslanders are paying for the epidemic of tooth decay in this state which is clearly linked to Queensland’s lack of fluoridation.
A 2002 cost-benefit analysis found that fluoridation returns $6-$20 in improved dental care for every $1 spent. It is the most effective way for everybody to access the known benefits of fluoride regardless of age, income and education.
For three to four decades, fluoridation has been safely and satisfactorily provided to 70-100 percent of residents in other states of Australia.
The oral health of generations of Queenslanders is being compromised because of this state’s failure to adopt a public health policy that medical and dental experts from around the world overwhelmingly endorse as a safe, effective means of improving oral health.
As a matter of professional interest, ADAQ monitors anti-fluoridation arguments and has not encountered any credible or valid reason to alter our pro-fluoridation policy.
Yours sincerely
Robert McCray
