Dear Editor

Day-in and day-out dentists see consequences of non-fluoridation

Your readers may be interested to know that the National Academy of Sciences - the prestigious United States scientific organisation whose members have included 160 Nobel Prize winners - endorses water fluoridation as do the World Health Organisation and other leading health and scientific authorities.

Anti-fluoridationists often refer to list of 14 Nobel Prize winners who have 'opposed' or 'expressed reservations' about water fluoridation (Letter from Haines, May 18). Apart from the fact that their original statements are never shown for verification, only one of those Nobel Prizes was awarded within the past 40 years during which time there has been widespread recognition of the benefits of water fluoridation.

That one is Sweden's Dr Arvid Carlsson (Medicine, 2000) who was part of a panel which recommended that the Swedish Government reject the practice. The Swedish Government discontinued water fluoridation in 1971 but this was a political decision not supported by leading health experts in Sweden.

The 2001 Australian Child Dental Health survey was designed to give an overall view of tooth decay across the country. It included only small numbers of children from many areas, and did not even consider fluoride intake.

Much larger studies taken over previous years show the true situation that dentists on the ground see day-in and day-out; namely that children in fluoridated centres such as Townsville, Dalby and all Australian capital cities except Brisbane have significantly less tooth decay than children in non-fluoridated towns.
