Letters to the Editor
The Gympie Times
20 April 2006
Dear Editor,
Your correspondent, Jean Allen (Letters, 11 April), points out
that diet is important for good oral health but there are also
two other important factors - regular brushing and flossing,
and access to fluoridation.
In all states except Queensland, more than 70 percent of residents
have access to fluoridation. Australians in every capital city,
except Brisbane, have enjoyed the safe and cost-effective benefits
of fluoridation for about 30-40 years depending on where they
live.
That's more than three decades in which adverse health affects,
if there were any, would have emerged. Dentists support fluoridation
and take a professional interest in arguments put forward by
anti-fluoridationists. I assure your readers that we have not
come across any credible or valid reasons to change our pro-fluoridation
policy.
Contrary to Ms Allen's assertions, no country has banned water
fluoridation. Some European countries have chosen to add fluoride
to salt because they have complex water distribution systems,
not because they have any issues with fluoridation.
